In reference to the group discussion my group held on October 8, 2007.
Group members- Courtney N., Katie H., Marissa S.,Amanda W. (me)
1. What was your primary contribution to the discussion?
My assigned job for the discussion was group leader. I created an office in the Tapped-In community and posted the discussion prompts in my office. My main contribution to the group was to present the questions to the group and respond to my other group members’ comments. I also contibuted by asking follow up questions which were relevant to the topic.
2. What questions emerged from your group’s discussion?
We discussed a variety of different issues regarfing copyright. Some of the main questions we asked were: How does someone illegally download music? Are companies like Napster in violation of copryright laws?Is copyright infringement also called plagiarism? Are SLPs allowed to use characters like Pooh and Eeyore in therapy without reciecing permission from the copyright owner? Do most professions have codes of ethics? How long does the process of proving someone guilty of copyright infringement work? Do schools like marshall have
attourneys/specialists to advise faculty and students about copyright laws?
3. What questions were answered for you in your groups discussion?
Most of the questions posed in the group discussion we collectively answered. The only questions that I still don’t have an answer for are: How long does the process of proving someone guilty of copyright infringement work? Do schools like marshall have
attourneys/specialists to advise faculty and students about copyright laws? I don’t think finding the answers to these questions would be difficult, I just haven’t made the effort to do so yet.
4. How will you apply what you learned in the readings and discussion to your own work?
For one, I will be extra careful when developing materials for use in therapy, or creating powerpoint presentations. It is very important to consider all of the facts and realize that one prohibited use and its jail and fines for you. I think it is also important to realize that these rules are there to protect individuals. Singers and songwriters could never make a living off their music if anyone could copy it and sell it. I think it is important to be safe, rather than sorry, and look up your questions using a reliable source like the website we viewed which outlined copyright laws.
